"From Student to Startup: Getting Started in Entrepreneurship” (Penn State Hazleton)

Penn State Hazleton, the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce, CAN BE, the Downtown Hazleton Alliance for Progress and the Small Business Development Center at Wilkes University (SBDC) are sponsoring a series of seminars that will provide information to those interested in starting or growing their own business.

“Steps to Starting and Growing Your Own Business” offers a variety information in several sessions for those seeking to become full-time or part-time entrepreneurs. There is no fee for any of the seminars and attendees can choose to come to any individual session or all sessions.

The first session, “Feasibility, Structure, Licensing and Registration,” will be held Wednesday, March 27, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce, 8 W. Broad St., Hazleton.
“Preparing a Business Plan and Financial Projections” will be held Wednesday, April 3, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce.

Three sessions on startups will be livestreamed to Penn State Hazleton from University Park:
  • Monday, April 1, 6:00 p.m.: Panel discussion, “From Student to Startup: Getting Started in Entrepreneurship”
  • Tuesday, April 2, 6:00 p.m.: Panel discussion, “The Entrepreneur’s Journey: Learning from Successes and Setbacks”
  • Wednesday, April 3, 6:00 p.m.: Panel discussion, “Innovation Happens Everywhere: Intrapreneurship in Established Organizations”
The panels will be livestreamed into Room 12 of the Mary M. and Bertil E. Lofstrom Library and are open to the public at no charge.

For high school students, a MakerSpace Innovation Workshop will be held on Friday, April 5, at the Lofstrom Library on campus. This workshop for high school students, part of the Hazleton LaunchBox, is designed to foster creative problem solving by using the MakerSpace and collaborative areas. Students will explore prototyping, design and teamwork through various exercises and projects that encourage experimentation and open-ended exploration. Mentors and facility staff will provide guidance as students work with pre-made material kits provided for the workshop.

The workshop will be led by Erik Angel, information resource and support specialist at Penn State Hazleton. It is sponsored by Penn State Hazleton, the Downtown Hazleton Alliance for Progress, the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce, CAN BE and Penn State University Libraries.
